ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Freshman Charlene "Maki" Kamimura leads all Aztecs golfers after day one of the 27th annual Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational Monday in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Kamimura (West Covina, Calif.) is tied for seventh place overall, carding a 2-under 71, at the par-73, 6,069-yard University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course.

"Our morale on the course was the best I've ever seen," SDSU head coach Felicia Brown said. "They all played really well and worked together, nobody gave up. The course was in great shape and the weather turned out perfect. Hopefully we can replicate the performance tomorrow."

SDSU stands in eighth place on the team leaderboard out of 18 schools, shooting a 6-over 298. It was the best single-round performance for the Aztecs since the second and third round of the 2004 Mountain West Conference Tournament, when they shot a 292 on both days. Ohio State leads the field by six strokes over second place USC and UNLV, carding a five-under 287.

Kamimura started at 1-over in her first nine holes, before carding three birdies to get to 2-under. She finished with six straight pars to log her first ever sub-par round. Her 71 is the best 18 holes of golf by an Aztec since spring of 2004.

Senior Heather MacRae (Dunblane, Scotland) actually logged the team's most birdies in the first round, tallying four to finish at 1-over 74, which was good for 25th place out of 98 golfers.

Sophomore Anna Booth (Coffs Harbour, Australia), who shot a 76, came in third among the Aztecs and 42nd in the field. Redshirt freshman Megan McLeod (Fallbrook, Calif.), who was the medalist at the team's opening tournament in Northern Arizona last week, carded a 77 and is in 50th place overall. Freshman Petra Cole (San Diego, Calif.) rounded out the Aztec golfers, with an 81 on the day.

The tournament's individual leaders after the first day are Jennifer Cassidy of Ohio State and Eileen Vargas of Pepperdine, who both shot a four-under 69.

The Aztecs tee off their second round of the three-day tournament at 8 a.m. on Tuesday at the first hole. SDSU will be grouped with Cal and New Mexico State.
