Aztec Women's Golf Climbs To Eighth With Another Record-Setting Round
Sept. 30, 2008
BROOMFIELD, Colo. -
The San Diego State women's golf squad capped an already memorable tournament with another record-setting round, firing a 2-over-290 to move into eighth place after the final round Tuesday at the 2008 Heather Farr/CU Memorial Invitational in Broomfield, Colo. The Aztecs' two-day score of 21-over 885 ties as the second best in school history for a 54-hole tournament, while the 290 in the final round tied for fifth-best on the day in the 20-team field at the par-72, 6,211-yard Omni Interlocken Golf Club.
"We started off (today's round) a little rocky at six-over through the first six holes, but rebounded to shoot four under the last 12 holes," said SDSU head coach Felicia Brown. "The team made some goals before the tournament and stuck to them. They played very well and I'm happy for the team."
Freshman Malin Enarsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) led the Aztec charge with her first career top-10 finish, posting a 71 over the final 18 holes to tie for eighth place at 1-under 215. Enarsson's total tied for second in school history and she became the first SDSU golfer to finish under par in a 54-hole event since Jenna Wilson shot a school-record 5-under 211 at the 2003 Lady Aztec Invitational. Enarsson now has three sub-par rounds in just two career tournaments.
Enarsson wasn't the only Aztec to impress on the final day, as sophomores Stephanie Arcala (Oceanside, Calif.) and Samantha Roberts (Carlsbad, Calif.) both shot career bests at even-par 72. Roberts' 54-hole score of 5-over 221 tied her for 28th place on the individual leaderboard and was her career-low by 17 strokes. Arcala, meanwhile, tied for 42nd place with teammate Maki Kamimura (West Covina, Calif.) at 9-over 225.
Junior Petra Cole (San Diego, Calif.) rounded out the Aztec contingent with a 240, including a tournament-best 79 over the final 18 holes.
Nineteenth-ranked Notre Dame claimed the team title by seven strokes over Texas Tech with a 6-under 858, while Long Beach State's Kay Hoey won medalist honors by three strokes with a 9-under 207.
San Diego State will split its squad in two weeks for the Aztec Fall Classic, Oct. 13-14, and the New Mexico State Price's "Give `Em Five" Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M., Oct. 13-15.
