Aztec Women's Golf's Christine Wong First After 18 Holes In New Mexico
Oct. 12, 2009
Two Aztec freshmen, Christine Wong (Richmond, B.C.) and Gina Clark (Murrieta, Calif.), had solid outings Monday to lead their respective squads, as the San Diego State women's golf team spilt for two tournaments in two different states. Wong is currently in a three-way tie for first place out of 93 golfers at the Price's Give `Em Five Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M., while Clark is tied for sixth out of 40 golfers at the Aztec Fall Classic in Chula Vista, Calif.
In Las Cruces, the Aztec `A' team is tied for fourth overall out of 18 schools after shooting a first-round 12-over 300 at the par-72, 6,319-yard New Mexico State University Golf Course. SDSU, which is ranked 54th nationally by golfstat.com, is two strokes out of third place and trails day one leader No. 35 UC Irvine by six strokes.
Wong was one of just four players to end the first 18 holes under par, as the freshman carded a 3-under 69 to tie for first place with Baylor's Hannah Burke and UC Irvine's Joy Trotter. Wong led the field with 15 pars and a 2-under average on par-4 scoring. The 69 matched her career-low round, which she also posted in the state of New Mexico at the Dick McGuire Invite in Albuquerque, Sept. 19.
The Canadian was one of three Aztecs in the top 14, as both junior Samantha Roberts (Carlsbad, Calif.) and sophomore Malin Enarsson (Gotheburg, Sweden) are tied for 14th place with 10 others with an opening effort of 3-over 75. Enarsson boasted a team-best four birdies on the afternoon and Roberts continued her strong play since finishing as the squad's top player at its most recent tournament in Colorado last week.
Back in Chula Vista, the San Diego State `B' team is tied for fourth at the seven-team tournament held at the par-72, 6,167-yard Salt Creek Golf Club. The Aztecs, who claimed last year's title, trail day one leader Cal State Northridge by 16 strokes and are 10 behind Cal Poly and UC Riverside, who are tied for second place.
Clark had 13 pars and two birdies to tie for sixth place with a first-round 3-over 75. Joining her in the top 15 are freshman Catharina Aasheim (Oslo, Norway), who fired a 78 to tie for ninth place after her first round as a collegian, and senior Ashley Wood (Lake Tahoe, Calif.), who is tied for 14th with an 80.
Aztec senior Heather Wilson (Chula Vista, Calif.) is four strokes behind her classmate Wood with a 12-over 84, followed by juniors Kaitlen Miyajima's (Wailuku, Hawaii) 85 and Faith DeGuzman's (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) 87.
Cal Poly's Maddy Fletcher is the only golfer under par, posting a 2-under 70 to own a four-stroke lead over four players, including three from day one leader Cal State Northridge.
The SDSU `A' squad will be paired with Oregon State and Baylor for Tuesday morning's 8:30 a.m. MT shotgun start in Las Cruces for the second of the tournament's three rounds. The SDSU `B' squad, meanwhile, will conclude action at the 36-hole Aztec Fall Classic Tuesday, starting at 8 a.m. PT also with a shotgun start.
