Kjellker Named MW Women's Golfer of the Week
March 1, 2018
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – San Diego State’s Sara Kjellker was named Mountain West Women’s Golfer of the Week, as announced Thursday by the league office. With her award, the Aztec freshman received the first weekly conference honor of her career and SDSU’s first this season.
Kjellker was the Aztecs’ No. 1 finisher for the third straight event and fourth time this year after tying for seventh out of 83 golfers at the Bruin Wave Invitational, Feb. 26-27, in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
A native of Hollviken, Sweden, Kjellker fired a collective 10-over-par 226 (76-73-77) for the week in a tournament that was plagued by damp and chilly conditions, helping SDSU to a fourth-place team finish, with the Scarlet and Black emerging as the lone non-Pac-12 Conference school in the top six.
With her total, Kjellker also recorded her second top-10 placement of the season, besting seven players ranked in the Golfstat top 80, including No. 1 Andrea Lee of Stanford and No. 10 Bethany Wu of UCLA.
In addition, Kjellker tied for second in the field with a 4.10 scoring average on par-4 holes and drained six birdies overall, as only one player finished under par for the tournament.
For the season, Kjellker leads the Aztecs with a 74.87 scoring average, and four rounds at or below par.
Kjellker and the No. 43 Aztecs return to action in two weeks when they travel south of the border for the University of Iowa’s Hawkeye-El Tigre Invitational, March 16-17, in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
