W. Golf Prepares for Bruin Wave Invite

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's golf team returns to action this week when it ventures to the greater Los Angeles area for the Bruin Wave Invitational, March 3-4, in Tarzana, Calif. The Aztecs, who are ranked 44th nationally by golfstat.com, are among a field of 17 schools slated to participate in the fifth annual event, which consists of two rounds on Monday, followed by the final 18 holes on Tuesday.
SDSU will joined at the par-72, 6,173-yard El Caballero Country Club by nine additional squads ranked in the top 50, including No. 1 USC, No. 2 UCLA, No. 9 Washington, No. 11 Arizona, No. 12 Oklahoma State, No. 17 Pepperdine, No. 26 California and No. 43 UNLV, while Brigham Young, Cal State Northridge, Colorado, Long Beach State, New Mexico State, Oregon State, UNC Wilmington, Washington State round out the list of competing teams.
Day one will feature a shotgun start at 8 a.m. PT, while the final round gets underway Tuesday with tee times on holes No. 1 and No. 10 as early as 7:30 a.m. A live scoring link for both days will be available courtesy of Golfstat on www.goaztecs.com.
Third-year head coach Leslie Spalding will employ the starting lineup of freshman Sirene Blair (South Jordan, Utah), sophomore Emma Henrikson (Malmö, Sweden), junior Paige Spiranac (Scottsdale, Ariz.), freshman Maria Fernanda Villegas (Ensenada, Mexico) and senior Maureen Dunnagan (Lexington, S.C.).
Henrikson was SDSU's top finisher in the event a year when she tied for 16th out of 79 golfers with a combined 12-over 228, while Spiranac also placed among the top 25, landing in a tie for 23rd at 15-over 231.
The Aztecs are coming off a seventh-place showing in their first tournament of the 2014 spring campaign at the Peg Barnard Invitational, Feb. 15-16, in Stanford, Calif., where three players finished within two shots of one another. Spiranac (+6) tied for the 15th, followed by Henrikson (+7), who posted a final-round 71 to climb into the 17th position, while Blair (+8) wound up in a tie for 21st.
Blair, who is No. 27 in the latest Golfstat individual rankings, leads SDSU with a 72.31 stroke average through 13 rounds, which is second in the Mountain West behind UNLV's Dana Finkelstein, while Henrikson sports a 73.85 scoring average, which ranks fourth in the conference.
El Caballero Country Club will play host to the Bruin Wave Invitational for the third year in a row. San Diego State boasted the individual winner in 2012 as Christine Wong captured medalist honors with a collective 3-over 219. In 2010 and 2011, the tournament was conducted at Robinson Ranch Golf Club in Santa Clarita, Calif.
Following the Bruin Wave Invite, the Aztecs will have three weeks off before playing host to the SDSU Farms Invitational, March 24-26, at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
