Aztec Christine Wong Earns Second MWC Golfer-of-the-Month Award
March 4, 2010
SAN DIEGO - San Diego State freshman Christine Wong (Richmond, B.C.) has been named the Mountain West Conference Golfer of the Month for her performance during the month of February, the league office announced Thursday. Wong also earned the same honor last November and becomes just the second Aztec to garner the award twice in one season, joining former standout Heather Rollo (2000-01).
Wong won the team's lone event in February, capturing the 54-hole Hurricane Invitational at the Don Shula Golf Resort in Miami Lakes, Fla., Feb. 14-16. Wong carded a 1-over 217, including an opening round 69, to win by three strokes in the 90-golfer field. The Canadian had 10 birdies over the three days and led the tournament in par-5 scoring at 5-under.
The victory was Wong's second in five career tournaments at the collegiate level and she is the first Aztec in the 11-year Mountain West era to claim two, 54-hole titles in the same season. Wong also was named Golfweek Magazine Player of the Week on Feb. 22, for her performance in Florida.
Wong is currently ranked 49th by golfstat.com and is 12th nationally among freshmen. She is the only player in the MWC to win an individual title in 2009-10.
Wong and the rest of the Aztecs continue their spring schedule with another tournament next week, as they travel north to the Julie Inkster Spartan Invitational, March 8-9, in San Jose, Calif.
