SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego State women's golf team resumes its spring schedule this week when it plays host to the prestigious SDSU March Mayhem tournament, March 20-22, in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. The fifth annual event will feature a match-play extravaganza for the third year in a row at the par-72, 6,211-yard Farms Golf Club.

Along with the No. 28 Aztecs, the elite field features seven additional schools ranked in the latest Golfstat top 40, including No. 2 USC, No. 14 Northwestern, No. 17 Arizona, No. 29 California, No. 31 Brigham Young, No. 38 Pepperdine and No. 39 UNLV, while Fresno State, Idaho, Iowa, New Mexico, Old Dominion, San Francisco, Washington State and Yale round out the list of competing squads.

The tournament gets underway Monday for the first round with tee times starting at 7:30 a.m. PT, before the event splits into championship and consolation brackets. Second-round matches will be contested in the afternoon on Monday, followed by third and fourth-round clashes on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. A link to live scoring, courtesy of BirdieFire, will be available on GoAztecs.com.

SDSU enters the week as the No. 4 seed and will lock horns with Iowa in the opening round on Monday morning. Should the Aztecs get past the Hawkeyes, they would face either Cal or Fresno State later in the afternoon.

Other first-round matches will pit USC vs. Yale, Northwestern vs. San Francisco, Arizona vs. New Mexico, BYU vs. Idaho, Pepperdine vs. Washington State and UNLV vs. Old Dominion.

Although SDSU's lineup is uncertain at press time, it will most likely feature senior Sirene Blair (South Jordan, Utah), who finds herself at No. 46 in the latest Golfstat Cup standings and is ranked 54th by Golfweek. The Aztec senior leads the squad with a 72.37 scoring average through seven tournaments this year to go with four top-10 finishes, including a pair of top-fives.

In SDSU's last outing at the Meadow Club Intercollegiate on March 7, Blair tied for fourth with a 1-under 215 to help the Scarlet and Black capture its second team title of the year. The three-time all-Mountain West performer also landed in the runner-up spot at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational last fall, where she established a school-record for lowest 18-hole score after shooting a 64 during the second round before finishing with a program-best 13-under 203.

Junior Georgia Lacey (Del Mar, Calif.), who earned Mountain West Women's Golfer of the Month honors last October, will likely be in the mix as well for the Aztecs this week. The Torrey Pines alumna ranks second on the squad with a 73.50 scoring average this season to go with three top-20 placements, highlighted by a second-place tie at the highly competitive Stanford Intercollegiate last fall.

The Aztecs recorded a fifth-place finish in the second installment of the Farms match-play format last season, opening with a dramatic 3-2 victory over TCU, before falling to UCLA 3-1 in round two. However, SDSU rebounded with two wins in the fifth-place bracket, defeating Kansas in a tiebreaker before downing Arizona State, 3.5-1.5. Individually, Blair and Lacey both posted 3-1 records during the event.

USC is the defending champion after beating Arizona in the finals last year.

Following the March Mayhem, the Aztecs will have over two weeks off before returning to action for the PING/ASU Invitational, April 8-9, at Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz.
