Aug. 23, 2005
SAN DIEGO - San Diego State senior women's golfer Heather MacRae won the Ladies' British Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship last Friday in Narin, England. MacRae won the tournament in an extra-hole shootout against Nicole Gergely of Austria, after both finished the 72-hole tournament with an even par score of 288. MacRae's par was good enough to win after Gergely bogeyed the hole.
MacRae, who was the halfway overnight leader, fell out of first with a third round score of 73 (216), putting her one shot off the pace. She and her playing partner, Gergely competed throughout the round with MacRae holding a one-shot lead heading into the final round. Gergely tied MacRae on the final hole to force the extra-hole shootout.
The second round saw MacRae post her lowest score of the tournament, with her 71 (-1). She also recorded four birdies in the round. MacRae posted five birdies in the first round, en route to the 12 she compiled for the whole tournament.
MacRae will return to San Diego on Tuesday and rejoin the Aztecs for her final season at SDSU.
