SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's golf team received a No. 28 preseason national ranking from Golfweek, while sophomore Christine Wong (Richmond, B.C.) was named one of the country's top 50 players for 2010-11 by Golf Digest.

The No. 28 ranking is 14 spots better than the team's No. 42 preseason prognostication last year. SDSU was one of just two schools from the Mountain West Conference to be represented in the 2010 poll, with TCU being the other at the No. 24 slot.

Head coach Emilee Klein, now in her second season, led the Aztecs to their first NCAA Regional appearance in six years this past May, finishing in 13th place at the central regional in Indiana. SDSU returns its top five stroke average leaders from that squad, including MWC Freshman of the Year Wong, who is on Golf Digest's list of the nation's top 50 players for 2010-11.

In her first season for the Red and Black, Wong led the team with a 74.76 stroke average and won a pair of tournaments. She's had a busy summer as well, finishing as the No. 2 amateur at the U.S. Women's Open in July. She also competed in the LPGA's CN Canadian Open last month, and was tabbed to represent Canada at the World Amateur Team Golf Championships in Argentina, which take place Oct. 16-31.

San Diego State opens its 2010-11 season with the Sept. 17-18 Dick McGuire/Branch Law Firm New Mexico Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. The Aztecs will also play host to the inaugural Battle at Rancho Bernardo Inn, set for March 20-22. The 17-team field includes 11 teams (including SDSU) that were mentioned in the Golfweek team rankings, highlighted by defending national champion Purdue, No. 2 UCLA, No 3. USC and No. 5 Arizona.
