The Aztecs are set to open their season at the 32nd annual Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational.

Sept. 14, 2012

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's golf team is set to open its 2012 campaign next week, when the Aztecs travel to the 33rd annual Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational, Sept. 17-18, at the UNM Championship Course in Albuquerque, N.M. SDSU has competed in each of the last nine Dick McGuire Invites over the past ten seasons, as the 2007 edition was not played.

The tournament features two rounds of golf on Monday and the final 18 on Tuesday (54 holes total). The shotgun start begins at 8 a.m. MT each day and the event offers live scoring on golfstat.com.

San Diego State will be one of 17 schools in this year's field, which also includes fellow Mountain West members Colorado State, UNLV and Wyoming, as well as host New Mexico. Baylor, the defending champion of the tournament, is the top-ranked team participating as it is No. 20 in the Aug. 29 National Golf Coaches Association poll. Three other teams are also ranked, as Pepperdine is No. 24 and Ohio State is No. 27. UC Davis, TCU and Colorado State are receiving votes in the poll.

Second-year head coach Leslie Spalding will bring five Aztecs to New Mexico, including returning seniors Christine Wong and Gina Clark, junior Maureen Dunnagan, sophomore Kristina Lynn and freshman Emma Henrikson.

A season ago, Wong played all 11 events and led the Aztecs with a 73.94 stroke average as well as posting four top-10 finishes and seven top-20 performances. The 2012 Mountain West Golfer of the Year also led SDSU to its third straight NCAA Regional berth. Clark also represented the Aztecs at last year's conference and NCAA regional tournaments and in 2011 she tallied two top-10 performances and three top-20 finishes.

Dunnagan and Lynn, meanwhile, will be making their SDSU debuts. Dunnagan joined the Aztecs in late June after spending two seasons at NC State. Lynn, on the other hand, looks to make an impact in 2012 after she worked on her game while being on SDSU's roster last season. Henrikson rounds out the lineup as she comes to Montezuma Mesa from Malmö, Sweden and will make her collegiate debut on Monday in the Land of Enchantment.

Last season at the Dick McGuire Invite, Clark and Wong helped propel SDSU to its best finish at the event since 2002. Clark finished in a tie for seventh place with a 1-over 220, which was her second top-10 finish of her career at a 54-hole tournament. Her score of 220 matched her career low also set at the 2010 Mountain West championships.

Christine Wong, meanwhile, made a sizeable jump up the individual leaderboard after the final round. The Richmond, B.C., native utilized her second consecutive 74, highlighted by five birdies, to go from 24th into a tie for 17th place with a 5-over 224.

Up next for the Aztecs will be the Golfweek Conference Challenge from Sept. 24-26, in Vail, Colo.
