Feb. 20, 2013
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State Lacrosse team will play its home opener at Aztec Lacrosse Field this Friday, Feb. 22, against Saint Mary's beginning at 7 p.m. PT. The Aztecs will wear their black uniforms for the night game under the lights.
SDSU is off to a 1-1 start this season after splitting two games on its Florida road trip last weekend. The Aztecs got their first victory on Sunday, defeating Stetson, 18-1, one day after losing to Jacksonville in their season-opener, 15-5, on Saturday.
Sophomore Bailey Ewing scored five total goals in the first two games, and currently leads the Aztecs with seven points. Sophomore Michaela Jarvis is second on the team with six points, while freshman Katie Gill and sophomore Lauren Maack each have three. Defensively, junior Christina Ricciardulli leads SDSU with five groundballs and senior goalkeeper Sammy Slattery has recorded 10 saves.
Friday will be Saint Mary's first game of the 2013 season, after the Gales finished 3-12 (1-6 MPSF) last year. Saint Mary's was predicted to finish ninth in the MPSF preseason poll, while SDSU was picked to finish fifth.
The Aztecs beat Saint Mary's on the road last season in a tight game, 13-12. Junior Meris Walsh led SDSU with four goals, Jarvis added three scores and Maack recorded three assists. SDSU trailed by three less than 10 minutes into the game, but rallied to knot the score, 8-8, at halftime. The Aztecs built their own three-point lead with just over 10 minutes left in the game, before holding on to win by one.
