SDSU Women's Soccer Falls to Florida State, 6-1
Sept. 14, 2003
LAWRENCE, Kan. - The Florida State Seminoles (2-4-0) racked up 20 shots and defeated the San Diego State Aztecs (1-4-0) in a women's soccer match on Sunday, 6-1. The game was part of the KUStore.com Crimson and Blue Invitational hosted by Kansas University.
Aztec senior forward Becky Prilaman scored the third goal of her career at the 83:15 mark. Her two previous goals as an Aztec came in a 5-1 win at Nevada on Oct. 13, 2002, and as the final goal in a 3-0 win over New Mexico in the 2000 Mountain West Conference post-season tournament on Nov. 1, 2000. Midfielder Jessica Korpela, a transfer from San Jose State, picked up her first point as an Aztec, delivering the assist on Prilaman's goal.
Midfielder Alexis Solovij was named to the all-tournament team because of her impressive play in the tournament. Offensively, she contributed four shots, two on goal. "She did a good job controlling the midfield and held onto the ball well," head coach Chuck Clegg said.
The Seminoles grouped their goals together in twos, scoring at the 15:52 and 16:30 marks, the 44:16 and 48:13 marks and the 61:35 and the 67:23 marks, building an insurmountable 6-0 lead. Seminole defender Katie Beal scored two of the goals while four other Seminoles contributed one goal each.
Florida State out-shot San Diego State for the game, 20-10, while the Seminoles held a slight edge in corner kicks, 8-6.
The Aztecs return to the road next weekend, playing at Southern Utah at 4 p.m. MDT on Sept. 19. The Thunderbirds are 0-5 entering a 1 p.m. match today at Long Beach State. Southern Utah also hosts Idaho State on Sept. 18 prior to meeting the Aztecs.
San Diego State remains in Cedar City, Utah, to face Weber State in a neutral-site game at 3 p.m. MDT on Sept. 20. The Wildcats are 1-3-2 and have no games between now and facing San Diego State.
