SAN FRANCISCO - San Diego State women's soccer head coach Mike Friesen was named the Division I CaptainU Coach of the Year recently. The coaching award is his third after receiving honors from the Mountain West and NSCAA (Pacific Region) earlier in the campaign.

Friesen guided the Aztecs to their best season in program history in 2012. SDSU won the MW regular season with an unblemished 7-0 record, captured the league tournament crown and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Championship.

In finishing with a record of 21-2-1, the Aztecs set single-season records for wins, fewest losses and highest winning percentage (.896). San Diego State also finished the season ranked seventh in the final NSCAA poll after rising to as high as fourth nationally, which marked its highest ranking ever, and third in the last RPI of 2012.

Top coaches in their respective sports and divisions were chosen for their teams' inspiring performances both on and off the field.

"The CaptainU College Coach of the Year awards recognize the top college coaches across the country for their exceptional leadership and accomplishments. It's inspiring to see the results they achieve - not just in the numbers they put up on the scoreboard, but in their devotion to helping students develop as athletes and human beings." said Avi Stopper, CEO of CaptainU.

CaptainU is the largest youth and college sports network. Over half a million high school athletes, youth sports events, youth coaches, and college coaches use CaptainU to promote themselves and their teams, and to connect with each other.
