Feb. 7, 2014
TEMPE, Ariz. -
The San Diego State softball team's three errors led to nine unearned runs in a 13-1, five-inning loss to No. 22/20 Stanford Friday afternoon at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. The loss dropped the Aztecs to 2-1, while the Cardinal improved to 2-0 with a game against Northwestern still to be played later today.
Stanford scored two runs in the top of the first inning, two (one earned) in the second, one in the third and eight (all unearned) in the fifth to complete the run-rule victory.
SDSU got its run in the third as sophomore Monica Downey (San Diego/Madison HS) had a one-out single and moved to second on senior Katie Mathis' (Grass Valley, Calif.) fielder's choice. Following a strikeout, junior Hayley Miles (Antelope, Calif.) singled to center field to score Downey for San Diego State's lone run. On the same play, Mathis was thrown out at third to end the threat.
Freshman Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.), who yesterday was 5-for-8 (.625) in her first two career collegiate games as the Aztecs swept Appalachian State (7-6 in eight innings) and Oregon State (6-3), drew a walk in her only plate appearance today.
Freshman Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.) took the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits and a walk over a combined 1 2/3 innings. Classmate Andi Smith (Orangeville, Utah) also logged 3 1/3 innings, giving up nine runs (one earned) on nine hits and two walks. Romero struck out two, while Smith had one.
SDSU wraps up its play in the Kajikawa Classic with a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning with a 4:30 p.m. MT (3:30 p.m. PT) contest vs. Cal Poly and a 7 p.m. MT (6 p.m. PT) game vs. Seattle.
