Softball Splits on Final Day in Cathedral City

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - Sophomore Lorena Klopp (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) went 3-for-4 with a home run, double and four RBIs to give the San Diego State softball team a 7-1 victory over Cal State Northridge and a split on the final day of the Cathedral City Classic on Sunday. Earlier in the day, the Aztecs (9-8) lost to No. 14/15 Stanford, 8-3.
In the nightcap, Klopp hit a ground-rule two-run double in the bottom of the fourth inning and a two-run homer in the sixth to help SDSU to a 7-1 win over the Matadors (1-14). Redshirt sophomore Patrice Jackson (Kansas City, Mo.) added a solo home run in the sixth and a double for San Diego State, which outhit CSUN, 12-5.
Senior Justeen Maeva (San Diego/Mira Mesa HS) had two hits and an RBI, while sophomore Hayley Miles (Antelope, Calif.) doubled and scored three times. Redshirt freshman Wendy Tamayo (San Diego/Mater Dei Catholic HS) also had her first two hits of the season.
Senior Bailey Micetich (Woodland, Calif.) got the complete game win after allowing one unearned run on three hits over seven innings. She struck out three.
In the opener, the Aztecs committed a season-high five errors, which resulted in seven unearned runs in an 8-3 loss to the No. 14/15 Cardinal.
Redshirt junior Rebecca Arbino (Clovis, Calif./Texas A&M) was the tough luck loser for SDSU after giving up eight runs (one earned) on eight hits and a walk over seven frames.
Miles homered and doubled, while Klopp (double), junior Kristin May (Corona, Calif.) (single) and junior Tiffany Corder (San Clemente, Calif./UC Santa Barbara) (single) also had hits for San Diego State.
The Aztecs return to San Diego to play host to the San Diego Classic I. SDSU and Brigham Young kick things off at 7 p.m. PT Thursday, while the rest of the tournament will be held at the Santee Softball Complex.
