Aztec Softball Falls at Colorado State, 7-4
April 26, 2009
FORT COLLINS, Colo. -
The San Diego State softball team was unable to answer Colorado State's late rally in 7-4 loss Sunday afternoon at Fort Collins, Colo. With the loss, the Aztecs fell to 31-15 overall and 8-2 in the Mountain West Conference. The Rams evened their record to 22-22 and 5-5.
Colorado State got on the scoreboard first when Rebecca Penland singled home Jenna Krogh in the bottom of the first inning.
SDSU answered with three scores in the second, highlighted by a two-run triple by sophomore Jen Wisneski (Riverside, Calif.) that scored redshirt senior Dani Sidoti (Tucson, Ariz.) and sophomore Jessica Camello (Temecula, Calif.). Wisneski then scored on a double by junior Brittany Knudsen (San Diego/Escondido HS).
San Diego State tacked on another run in the third as redshirt senior Taryin Casillas (San Diego/Grossmont HS) extended her career-long hitting streak to 10 games with a single up the middle that scored junior Stefanie Quichocho-Rosario (San Diego/Morse HS). It appeared the Aztecs were headed for a big inning as they got two runners into scoring position with no outs. However, two strikeouts and a groundout later the inning was over.
The two stranded runners would come back to haunt SDSU in the fourth when the Rams' Caitlan Stem hit a three-run homer to center field, which tied the game at 4-4.
Rebecca Penland then gave Colorado State the lead for good in the fifth with a two-run blast to center. Christine Thomsen's single in the seventh that plated Stem sealed the game for the Rams.
Floros and McCorkle each had two hits to lead the San Diego State offense.
Sophomore Samantha Beasley (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) (14-11) was tagged with the loss after yielding six runs on eight hits and two walks. She struck out five over her 4 1/3 innings. Freshman Bailey Micetich (Woodland, Calif.) allowed one run on three hits over 1 2/3 innings of relief.
The Aztecs begin a five-game homestand to close out the regular season Thursday at 6 p.m. against Utah.
