The San Diego State softball team opens the home portion of its schedule this weekend when it hosts the 23rd annual Campbell/Cartier Classic at SDSU Softball Stadium.

This year's classic features seven teams, including three nationally ranked foes (No. 2/1 Oklahoma, No. 18/16 Washington and No. 24/22 Kentucky) and five teams (No. 2/1 Oklahoma, No. 18/16 Washington, No. 24/22 Kentucky, Notre Dame and the Aztecs) who made last year's NCAA tournament.

The seven teams will play a combined 17 games over four days, including six games each on Friday and Saturday. SDSU, which is receiving votes in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll, will play games against Kentucky (6 p.m. PT) on Thursday, Oklahoma (6 p.m. PT) and Cal Poly (8:15 p.m. PT) on Friday, Notre Dame (6 p.m. PT) on Saturday and UC Riverside (1:30 p.m. PT) on Sunday.

The tournament is named after Susanne Campbell and Karin Cartier, who lost their lives during the 1991 softball season in a single-car accident that took place in Rosarito, Mexico. It left a lasting mark on teammates, coaches and the program. To pay tribute to Campbell and Cartier, the Aztec softball team renamed the SDSU Spring Classic in 1994 to the Campbell/Cartier Classic in memory of their friendship and fine athletic ability.

After one weekend, the Aztecs have four players batting over .400, including senior Kamerin May (.471), redshirt junior Patrice Jackson (.467), freshman Monica Downey (.444) and junior Lorena Bauer (.438).

Redshirt senior Rebecca Arbino leads the pitching staff with a 3-1 record and 1.24 ERA over 22 2/3 innings, while freshman Danielle O'Toole is 0-1 with a 1.62 ERA over 8 2/3 innings.
