SAN DIEGO -
SDSU Softball to Face Two Ranked Teams at Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic
The MNCC, formerly the Cathedral City Classic, is one of the largest and most competitive Division I softball tournaments outside of the NCAA tournament. This year's tourney features 35 teams, including 18 that made last season's NCAA tournament and five of the eight Women's College World Series teams. The entire tournament is held at Big League Dreams park across five fields.
The Aztecs (8-2), who are receiving votes in both the USA Today/NFCA and the ESPN.com/USA Softball polls, will play Fordham (3 p.m. PT) and No. 12/16 Texas A&M (8 p.m. PT) on Thursday, No. 16/18 Missouri at 8:30 p.m. PT Friday, Northwestern at 12:30 p.m. PT Saturday and Oklahoma State at 4:30 p.m. PT Sunday.
SDSU is off to its best start since starting 9-1 in 2008 and third-best start in program history, including wins over 2013 NCAA tournament teams Oregon State (6-3) and then No. 23/25 California (7-3).
Senior Patrice Jackson (Kansas City, Mo.) leads the San Diego State offense with a .500 average (11-for-22) to go along with four homers, 10 RBIs, nine runs and 14 walks, while freshman Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.) is hitting .407 (11-for-27) with nine RBIs.
Sophomore Danielle O'Toole (Upland, Calif.) has done the bulk of pitching for the Aztecs, going 7-0 with a 1.43 ERA over 44 innings. She has 35 strikeouts, limiting the opposition to a .202 average.
