The San Diego State softball team continues its tough opening portion of the 2013 schedule this weekend when it travels to Cathedral City, Calif., for the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.

The MNCC, formerly the Cathedral City Classic, is one of the largest and most competitive Division I softball tournaments outside of the NCAA tournament. This year's tourney features 35 teams, including 22 that made last season's NCAA postseason, nine that made the NCAA Super Regionals and five of the eight Women's College World Series teams. The entire tournament is held at Big League Dreams park across five fields.

Those traveling to the tournament should know that the Date Palm overpass will be closed from 7 p.m.-5 a.m. from Thursday through Sunday. The I-10 freeway will be closed at Date Palm each day from 8 p.m.-4 a.m. An alternate route is suggested.

The Aztecs, who are once again receiving votes in the latest ESPN.com/USA Softball poll, are scheduled to play No. 7/7 Missouri (5:30 p.m. PT) and Virginia (8 p.m. PT) on Thursday, Syracuse (6 p.m. PT) on Friday, Ohio State (12:30 p.m. PT) on Saturday and No. 9/11 Oregon (2 p.m. PT) on Sunday. Oregon made last year's WCWS, and the Ducks, Missouri (NCAA Super Regionals) and Syracuse (NCAA Regionals) combined to go 13-7 in last year's NCAA tourney.

SDSU is 6-4 this season with three of its losses coming to nationally ranked schools and 2-3 against teams that made last year's NCAA tournament.

Senior Kamerin May (Corona, Calif.) (2 HR, 7 RBI) leads San Diego State with a .424 average, while redshirt junior Patrice Jackson (Kansas City, Mo.) (.379, 2 HR, 6 RBI) and junior Lorena Bauer (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) (.355, 5 HR, 12 RBI) are also hitting above .350.

Redshirt senior Rebecca Arbino (Clovis, Calif.) (5-2, 1.33 ERA, 42.0 IP) and freshman Danielle O'Toole (Upland, Calif.) (1-2, 1.80 ERA, 23.1 IP) lead a pitching staff that has combined for a MW-leading 1.64 ERA.
