The Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, formerly the Cathedral City Classic, is one of the largest and most competitive Division I softball tournaments outside of the NCAA tournament. This year's tourney features 46 teams across two weekends, including six of the eight Women's College World Series teams. The entire tournament is held at Big League Dreams park across five fields.
After starting 1-8, SDSU avenged an earlier defeat to North Dakota State by winning, 4-1, last Saturday and then beat Cal State Fullerton, 2-1, on Sunday. Both teams made the NCAA tournament last year.
Out of San Diego State’s eight losses on the year, two have come in extra innings, three have been by one run, one by two scores and one by three runs.
Heading into the weekend, the Aztecs have five players batting over .300 in Janina Jusay (.333, 2 SB), Katie Byrd (.314, 5 R, 5 RBI), Taylor Adams (.314, 2 R), Taylor Stewart (.308, 1 HR, 3 RBI) and Molly Sturdivant (.303, 3 HR, 9 RBI).
The SDSU pitching staff has posted a 2.16 ERA over its last 10 games and is led by Alex Formby, who is 1-4 with a 3.23 ERA over 26 innings. Batters are hitting just .211 against Formby. Marissa Moreno (1-2, 4.64 ERA) leads the squad with 31 2/3 innings pitched.
