SDSU Softball Set to Co-Host San Diego Classic I
Feb. 26, 2014
SAN DIEGO -
San Diego State Softball to Co-Host San Diego Classic I This Weekend
The four-day, 29-game tournament will be held at SDSU Softball Stadium (16 games) and USD Softball Complex (13 games).
The tournament could almost be called the Mountain West Invitational as six of the 12 teams have some affiliation with the Aztecs' (10-5) conference. Current members in the tournament include SDSU, Colorado State, Fresno State and Utah State, while Brigham Young and Utah were original members of the MW and played in the league from 2000-11. In fact, either San Diego State or BYU has won each of the past nine regular season MW championships. Grand Canyon, Illinois-Chicago, Lehigh, Ole Miss, No. 2/2 Tennessee and co-host San Diego are also in this weekend's tournament.
The Aztecs are scheduled to meet Brigham Young (3:30 p.m. PT) and No. 2/2 Tennessee (6 p.m. PT) on Thursday, Ole Miss at 7 p.m. PT Friday and Utah at 7 p.m. PT Saturday.
At 10-5, SDSU is off to its best 15-game start to the season since 2008 (11-4) and is tied for the fourth-best start in school history.
Senior Patrice Jackson (Kansas City, Mo.) leads the San Diego State offense with a .457 average (16-for-35) to go along with seven homers, 16 RBIs, 12 runs and 18 walks, while freshman Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.) is batting .368 (14-for-38) with a .538 on-base percentage.
Sophomore Danielle O'Toole (Upland, Calif.) has done the bulk of pitching for the Aztecs, going 9-2 with a 1.51 ERA over 69 2/3 innings. She has 60 strikeouts against just eight walks, limiting the opposition to a .216 average.
