San Diego State Softball Set to Co-Host 11-Team, 27-Game San Diego Classic I
The tournament will feature the co-host Aztecs (6-10) and co-host San Diego, along with Boston Univ., Colorado State, CSUN, No. 22/rv Long Beach State, No. 21/20 Minnesota, rv/rv Oregon State, Santa Clara, UCF and No. 3/3 UCLA.
On the docket for SDSU is UCF at 6 p.m. PT Thursday, No. 21/20 Minnesota (4:30 p.m. PT) and CSUN (7 p.m. PT) on Friday, Boston Univ. at 7 p.m. PT Saturday and No. 3/3 UCLA at 2 p.m. PT Sunday.
After starting 1-8, San Diego State is 5-2 since, including a 2-1 win over then rv/No. 25 Notre Dame last Friday at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
Out of the Aztecs’ 10 losses on the season, three have come in extra innings, three with the international tiebreaker rule in effect, three by one score, two by two runs and two by three scores.
Heading into the weekend, Katie Byrd leads the team in hitting with a .302 average (min. 16 plate appearances), seven runs, 16 hits, four doubles, five walks and a .362 on-base percentage. Molly Sturdivant (.294), meanwhile, leads the squad with four home runs, 14 RBIs and a .421 slugging percentage, and Aris Metcalfe has a team-high four stolen bases.
The SDSU pitching staff has gotten better each weekend, posting a 2.99 ERA and limiting the opposition to a .267 average. Fresh off being named the Mountain West Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday, Alex Formby is 3-5 with a 2.26 ERA over 43 1/3 innings, striking out 32 against eight walks and holding the opposition to a .194 average. Marissa Moreno has also impressed, going 2-3 with a 3.00 ERA over 51 1/3 innings. Over the last two weeks (10 games), the duo has gone 5-4 with a 0.53 ERA in 66 innings.
