Danielle O'Toole Named MW Pitcher of the Week
March 4, 2014
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State sophomore Danielle O'Toole (Upland, Calif.) has been named the Mountain West Pitcher of the Week, the league announced today. It is the second career weekly honor for O'Toole and the first weekly accolade by an Aztec this season.
O'Toole pitched all 14 innings for SDSU in the rain-shortened San Diego Classic I, going 1-1 with a 1.50 ERA against a pair of teams that made last year's NCAA tournament, including Women's College World Series qualifier No. 2/2 Tennessee. She struck out 14 against two walks and limited the opposition to a .212 average as only two of the 11 hits she allowed were for extra-bases.
In the opener vs. Brigham Young on Thursday, O'Toole tossed a five-hit shutout in San Diego State's 2-0 victory. It was the second consecutive shutout for O'Toole, who allowed just five hits (all singles) and a walk over seven innings, while striking out eight. She stranded eight Cougars (7-10) on base and held the visitors to a 0-for-9 (.000) mark with runners in scoring position and 2-for-15 (.133) with runners on base.
In the nightcap vs. No. 2/2 Tennessee, O'Toole held the Lady Vols (15-1), who came into the weekend with a .348 average and 15 home runs, hitless until the top of the third inning when Megan Geer hit a one-out single and Madison Shipman followed with a homer on a 3-0 pitch. It was the only two hits she allowed until the sixth when UT had four more hits, but only managed one run. For the game, O'Toole gave up three runs on six hits and a walk, over seven innings, while striking out six. She had her scoreless streak snapped at 20 innings on the two-run homer in the third. O'Toole ended up throwing 225 pitches over the two games.
On the season, O'Toole is 10-3 with a 1.51 ERA over 83 2/3 innings. She has started 12 of the team's 18 games, completing 10 of them with two shutouts. O'Toole has 74 strikeouts against just 10 walks, while limiting the opposition to a .215 average.
The Aztecs (11-7), who are receiving votes in both the USA Today/NFCA and ESPN.com/USA Softball polls, head to Wichita, Kan., for the Shocker Softball Classic this weekend. SDSU will play host Wichita State at 3:30 p.m. CT, UMKC (10:30 a.m. CT) and Iowa State (3:30 p.m. CT) on Friday, Northern Illinois at 3:30 p.m. CT Saturday and North Dakota at 10 a.m. CT Sunday.
