The San Diego State softball team begins a season-long nine-game stay away from SDSU Softball Stadium this weekend at the Louisville Slugger Invitational, co-hosted by Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State.

The Aztecs (8-12) will begin their play in the tournament Friday in Fullerton, Calif., with games against No. 16/19 Ohio State at 1 p.m. PT and Boston Univ. at 3:30 p.m. PT. SDSU then plays in Long Beach, Calif., on Saturday with games vs. Michigan State (9 a.m. PT) and against host and No. 22/rv LBSU (11:30 a.m. PT). San Diego State wraps up its play in the tourney with a 10 a.m. PT Sunday game at Cal State Fullerton.

Following this week’s tourney, the Aztecs play with a midweek game (March 14) vs. Fairfield at the University of San Diego, before kicking off Mountain West play from March 16-18 at San Jose State.

After starting 1-8, SDSU is 7-4 since, including wins over then rv/No. 25 Notre Dame and then No. 21/20 Minnesota.

Out of San Diego State’s 12 losses on the season, three have come in extra innings, three with the international tiebreaker rule in effect, four by one score, three by two runs and two by three scores.

Heading into the weekend, Katie Byrd leads the team in hitting with a .297 average, eight runs, 19 hits, four doubles, six walks and a .357 on-base percentage. Molly Sturdivant (.286), meanwhile, leads the squad with four home runs, 15 RBIs and a .492 slugging percentage, and Aris Metcalfe has a team-high six stolen bases in six attempts.
