Aztec Softball Begins MW Play at New Mexico

Sydnee Cable and the Aztecs open MW play at New Mexico this weekend.

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State softball team begins its defense of the Mountain West title this weekend when it opens conference play in a three-game series with New Mexico in Albuquerque, N.M. The Aztecs (22-8), who are receiving votes in the latest Softball poll, will play the Lobos (9-18) at 5 p.m. MT Friday, 1 p.m. MT Saturday and 1 p.m. MT Sunday.

At 22-8, SDSU has matched its best start in school history. The 2006 San Diego State team also started 22-8 and went onto finish with a 34-15 record.

Offensively, the Aztecs are led by freshman Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and senior Patrice Jackson (Kansas City, Mo.). Cable leads SDSU in batting average (.422), hits (35), doubles (8), times hit by pitch (10) and on-base percentage (.564), while Jackson paces San Diego State in runs (20), home runs (11), RBIs (32), total bases (67), slugging percentage (.859) and walks (31), while batting .359 with a .541 on-base percentage.

Sophomore Leia Ruiz (Chino, Calif.) (.343, 16 R), senior Katie Mathis (Grass Valley, Calif.) (.316, 15 R, 6 SB) and senior Dominique Dinner (Monterey, Calif.) (.310, 15 SB) are also hitting over .300 for the Aztecs.

SDSU is batting .293 on the season with 20 home runs, 43 stolen bases, a .438 slugging percentage and a .388 on-base mark.

Sophomore Danielle O'Toole (Upland, Calif.), who on Tuesday was named the MW Pitcher of the Week for the second time this year, continues to lead the San Diego State pitching staff, going 16-3 with a 1.27 ERA and a save over 115 1/3 innings. She has started 16 of the team's 30 games, completing 13 of them with three solo shutouts and a combined shutout. O'Toole has 105 strikeouts against just 14 walks, holding the opposition to .209 average.

Freshmen Andi Smith (Orangeville, Utah) (3-2, 2.54 ERA, 41.1 IP) and Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.) (3-3, 5.10 ERA, 45.1 IP) have also seen their innings increase as the season has worn on. The Aztecs have a 2.39 team ERA.

UNM, which is batting .288, is led by Naomi Tellez (.351, 3 HR, 18 RBI), Chelsea Anaya (.330, 4 HR, 13 RBI) and Shelbie Franc (.328). Four players have logged innings for New Mexico, which has a team ERA of 6.62. Lauren Soles (2-2, 4.08 ERA, 24.0 IP) and Lisa Rodrigues (4-4, 4.77 ERA, 54.1 IP) have the two best ERA's for the Lobos.
