March 26, 2012
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State softball team heads to Tucson, Ariz., for a pair of games against No. 14/13 Arizona. The Aztecs (18-17) and Wildcats (19-8) will play at 7 p.m. MST (also 7 p.m. PDT) Tuesday and again at 3 p.m. MST (also 7 p.m. PDT) Wednesday.
SDSU is coming off a 2-1 weekend at the Libby Matson Tournament in Stockton, Calif. San Diego State picked up wins over Princeton (3-2 in nine innings) and Saint Mary's (5-0) with its only loss coming to host Pacific (3-1).
Sophomore Hayley Miles (Antelope, Calif.) led the Aztecs with a .667 (8-for-12) average, a home run, three doubles, four RBIs and two runs. Classmate Katie Mathis (Grass Valley, Calif.) was 3-for-6 with a double and two RBIs, and senior Felicia Reifschneider (San Diego/Morse HS) was 2-for-6 (.333) with two runs and a stolen base. Senior Bailey Micetich (Woodland, Calif.) finished 1-0 in the circle with a 1.05 ERA over 13 1/3 innings, while redshirt junior Rebecca Arbino (Clovis, Calif./Texas A&M) was 1-1 with a 2.42 ERA over 8 2/3 innings.
On the season, Miles leads SDSU in almost every offensive category, including doubles (15), a mark that leads the country and ranks fourth in per game average (0.43). With enough at-bats to now qualify for the school's single-season leaders, Miles ranks first in batting average (.405), on-base percentage (.477), slugging percentage (.748), OPS (on-base percentage + slugging percentage) percentage (1.225) and doubles (15), second in extra-base hits (23) and tied for third in home runs (7).
Senior Justeen Maeva (San Diego/Mira Mesa HS) leads the squad in RBIs (23) and is just four short of tying the all-time career school-record mark of 102, despite only being in her third season at San Diego State. Sophomore Lorena Klopp (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) has a team-high eight home runs in just 23 games, while Reifschneider has a team-high nine stolen bases.
Arbino (8-7, 1.89 ERA, 103 2/3 innings) and Micetich (8-5, 1.96 ERA, 92 2/3 innings) lead a pitching staff that has a 2.26 ERA, six shutouts and 190 strikeouts.
UA, which was ranked 14th in last week's USA Today/NFCA poll and 13th by ESPN.com/USA Softball, will most likely drop a few spots in the new poll, which comes out tomorrow. Last week, Arizona split at home against New Mexico State and was swept in a three-game series at Pac-12 rival Arizona State.
Jessica Spigner leads the Wildcats with a .354 average to go along with seven home runs and 27 RBIs. Brigette Del Ponte (.354, 5 HR, 25 RBI) and Shelby Pendley (.338, 9 HR, 31 RBIs) have also been the team's main offensive contributors. Shelby Babcock (9-5, 2.47 ERA, 85.0 IP) and Kenzie Fowler (8-3, 2.68 ERA, 75.2 IP) have done the bulk of the pitching for UA.
