San Diego State Welcomes San José State for Weekend Series
San Diego State looks to get back on the winning track this weekend when it plays host to San José State at SDSU Softball Stadium.
The Aztecs (18-13, 2-4 MW), who have lost their first two Mountain West series for the first time since 2005, meet the Spartans (21-10 entering a non-conference Wednesday game, 2-1 MW) at 6 p.m. PT Friday, 6 p.m. PT Saturday and noon PT Sunday. Saturday’s game will be on the Mountain West Network.
Of SDSU’s 13 losses this year, four have come against the top 25 (1-4) and nine vs. teams that made the 2016 NCAA tournament (8-9).
San Diego State is on pace to break numerous school single-season offensive records, including average (.351), on-base percentage (.410) and slugging percentage (.502). Among the 291 teams in the nation, the Aztecs rank fourth in batting average, tied for 16th in doubles per game (1.58), 19th in on-base percentage, 22nd in slugging percentage and 26th in runs per game (6.16).
SDSU has six players batting at least .370, led by Molly Sturdivant (.400, 7 HR, 27 RBI), who leads the team in average, slugging percentage (.753), on-base percentage (.480) and walks (14, tied). Taylor Stewart is hitting .378 with 14 walks and a .467 on-base mark, while Katie Byrd (2 HR, 19 RBI, 25 R, 10 2B) and Zaria Meshack (16 R) are each at .375. Jenavee Peres is batting .371 with teams highs in runs (30), hits (39), home runs (8), and RBIs (31, tied), and Sydnee Cable (.370) is tied with Peres for the most RBIs (31) on the team.
Marissa Moreno (7-4, 3.15 ERA) leads a balanced San Diego State pitching staff, pacing the team in wins, ERA, innings pitched (60.0) and strikeouts (36). Erica Romero (5-3, 3.44 ERA, 59.0 IP, 1 SV), Julie McDonald (2-3, 4.42 ERA, 38.0 IP, 1 SV) and Alex Formby (4-3, 4.52 ERA, 48.0 IP, 3 SV) have also logged innings in the circle for the Aztecs.
