Second-Place San Diego State Heads to League-Leading Utah State
The Aztecs (25-15, 9-6 MW), who are in the midst of a stretch of nine road games out of their final 12, sit three games back from the Aggies (30-11, 12-5 MW) heading into the weekend. The two teams are scheduled to play at 4 p.m. MT Friday, 4 p.m. MT Saturday and noon MT Sunday.
SDSU continues its torrid offensive pace as it ranks first in the country and 18th in NCAA single-season history in batting average (.359), eighth in slugging percentage (.518), 10th in on-base percentage (.417) and runs per game (6.40), and tied for 12th in doubles per game (1.60). San Diego State could go hitless in its next 180 at-bats (0-for-180) and still break its 2015 single-season batting average record of .310.
The Aztecs currently have five players ranked in the top 14 in the school’s single-season history in batting average, led by junior Zaria Meshack (Vallejo, Calif.) in a tie for first (.429, 29 R), junior Jenavee Peres (Garden Grove, Calif.) in third (.420, 12 HR, 45 RBI, 43 R), senior Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.) in seventh (.391, 5 HR, 40 RBI), sophomore Molly Sturdivant (Santa Ana, Calif.) in 12th (.384, 8 HR, 38 RBI, 12 2B) and sophomore Katie Byrd (Santee, Calif./West Hills HS) in 14th (.383, 3 HR, 31 RBI, 35 R, 14 2B).
Senior Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.) (8-4, 2.99 ERA) leads a balanced SDSU pitching staff, pacing the team in ERA, innings pitched (86.2) and strikeouts (49), while freshman Marissa Moreno (Torrance, Calif.) (9-5, 3.55 ERA, 73.0 IP) leads the squad in wins and junior Alex Formby (Orange, Calif.) (6-3, 3.81 ERA, 64.1 IP) in saves (4). Sophomore Julie McDonald (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) (2-3, 4.20 ERA, 40.0 IP) has also logged innings for San Diego State.
