SDSU Softball Wraps Up Regular Season at Nevada for Weekend Series
The San Diego State softball team wraps up its regular-season schedule with a weekend series with Nevada in Reno. Still alive in the Mountain West race, the Aztecs (29-17, 13-8 MW) will play the Wolf Pack (27-21, 12-9 MW) at 4 p.m. PT Thursday, 4 p.m. PT Friday and noon PT Saturday. The final two games of the series will be broadcast on the Mountain West Network.

SDSU trails San José State by two games heading into the final weekend of MW play and will have to win two more games than the Spartans (15-6 MW) to earn the league’s automatic bid into the NCAA tournament. San Diego State, which has a league-record seven MW titles, needs to either sweep Nevada and have SJSU lose at least twice at UNLV, or win two of three and have San Jose State lose all three with the Rebels. The Aztecs own the tiebreaker with the Spartans after winning the series from March 31-April 2. Fresno State (12-8) is the only other team that has a chance for the league title, but would need a lot of help to win its third straight MW championship. Should SDSU not win the auto bid to the tournament, it will wait for a possible at-large bid on the NCAA Selection Show (7 p.m. PT Sunday on ESPN2).

San Diego State continues its torrid offensive pace as it ranks first in the country in batting average (.352), eighth in scoring (6.43) and slugging percentage (.516), 11th in on-base percentage (.415), 22nd in doubles per game (0.37) and 36th in home runs per game (0.91). The Aztecs could go hitless in their next 192 at-bats (0-for-192) and still break its 2015 single-season batting average record of .310.

SDSU currently has four players ranked in the top 13 in the school’s single-season history in batting average, led by junior Jenavee Peres (Garden Grove, Calif.) (.443. 51 R, 14 HR, 53 RBI) in first, junior Zaria Meshack (Vallejo, Calif.) (.401, 31 R) in fifth, senior Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.) (.391, 6 HR, 42 RBI) in seventh and sophomore Molly Sturdivant (Santa Ana, Calif.) (.381, 8 HR, 41 RBI) in 13th.

Senior Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.) (10-5, 3.19 ERA, 98.2 IP) leads a balanced San Diego State pitching staff, while freshman Marissa Moreno (Torrance, Calif.) (11-5, 3.54 ERA, 89.0 IP) and junior Alex Formby (Orange, Calif.) (6-4, 3.85 ERA, 72.2 IP, 5 SV) have also logged at least 70 innings in the circle.
