Aztecs Complete Undefeated Season With Win At USD

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State swimming and diving team completed its 2010-11 regular season with a 150-136 victory over the University of San Diego at the USD Sports Center Pool Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Aztecs finish with a perfect 19-0 record in dual meets including an 8-0 mark in league competition.

Over the course of Saturday's meet, San Diego State won 10 of the 12 individual swimming races with nine different Aztecs claiming first-place finishes. In addition, SDSU captured one of the two relays along with both the 1-meter and 2-meter diving events.

SDSU begin the meet by winning the 200 medley relay as the foursome of Leona Jennings, Katelyn Weddle, Mikaela Macklin and Stephanie Koch turned in a time of 1:46.30. All four of those swimmers would also win individual races during the afternoon.

Sophomore Meghan Zimmer was the Aztecs' lone swimmer to win two events on the day as she took first in both the 100 and 200 backstroke with times of 58.35 and 2:05.88 respectively. She also finished second in the 200 individual medley by just .32 second.

Freshman Kelly Marquenie began SDSU's run of individual victories by capturing gold in the 1000 freestyle in 10:03.88. Katelyn Weddle won the 100 breaststroke (1:06.26) with Brooke Vessey touching the wall first in the 200 butterfly (2:05.36).

Sophomores Kim Bierwith and Stephanie Koch were winners in the 50 and 100 freestyle. Bierwith went 23.95 in the 50 with Koch later turning in a 51.70 in the 100.

SDSU's other individual winners included Melanie Garibaldi in the 500 free (5:00.28), Mikaela Macklin in the 200 breaststroke (57.16) and Leona Jennings in the 200 breaststroke (2:22.54).

Meanwhile, Kristen Meier was victorious in both the 1-meter (298.65) and 3-meter (279.45) diving competitions. It marked the seventh time in SDSU's last eight dual meets that she swept both events.

Coming up next in just over two weeks for San Diego State is the annual Mountain West Conference Championship Meet to be held at Oklahoma City Community College Feb. 23-26. The Aztecs will be looking to improve on last year's result when they recorded their best-ever third place finish at that event.
