COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State freshman swimmer Anika Apostalon has earned Mountain West Women's Swimmer of the Week honors for competition from Dec. 10, 2013-Jan. 7, 2014. It is the third time that she has captured the Mountain West weekly honor this season.
Apostalon (Albuquerque, N.M. / Albuquerque Academy) led the Aztecs to five dual wins during the holiday break, including victories over Mountain West opponents Air Force (149-130) and Boise State (155-144).
Most recently she won a pair of individual events and two relays in a double dual meet with Boise State and Grand Canyon at UC San Diego. Her victories in the 50-yard freestyle (23.02) and 100-yard backstroke (54.96) set pool records at the Canyonside Aquatic Center. She also helped establish facility records in both the 200 medley and 400 free relays, and her 100-back time was an NCAA `B' cut mark.
With SDSU holding a two-point lead over Boise State going into the final event, Apostalon swam the leadoff leg of the 400-yard freestyle relay and staked the Aztecs to a 1.31 second lead. SDSU won the event by 1.30 seconds and won the meet. Her 100 free time of 50.26 in that leadoff leg marked her fifth pool record of the day.
In a home double dual meet against Air Force and UC San Diego on Dec. 30, she won the 200-free (1:49.35), 50-free (23.10) and 200-back (2:02.41) and swam the leadoff leg for the winning 400-free relay team (3:28.05). She set Aztec Aquaplex pool records in the 50- and 200-free races and her leadoff leg in the 400-free relay set a pool record for the 100-freestyle as well.
Apostalon was also a member of two winning relay teams in the dual meet against Chicago on Dec.20 at the Aztec Aquaplex. Those winning squads included the 800 free and 200 free relays and additionally she was a member of the second-place 1500 free relay quartet as well.
During SDSU's three meets over the holiday period, Apostalon won 10 of the 11 events in which she was entered including five individual races and five relays while setting a total of eight pool records at two facilities.
