Swimmers Visit USD For Regular-Season Finale

Feb. 5, 2009

San Diego State concludes its 2008-09 regular season with a trip across town to meet the University of San Diego on Saturday, Feb. 7, at noon at the USD Sports Center Pool. Because the USD facility does not have a three-meter board, the diving competition will be held at SDSU's Aztec Aquaplex at 11:00 a.m. Scores for the diving will be added into the team scores for the meet.

The San Diego State swimming and diving team won two of three contests in a triple dual meet at the Aztec Aquaplex. SDSU defeated UC San Diego (140-22) and Northern Colorado (246-53), but fell to conference foe Wyoming (136-64).

Freshman Jeannette Engzell led the Aztecs with a first place in the 200 breaststroke and a second in the 100 breast. Other first-place finishers for San Diego State included Elisabeth Krueger in the 200 yard fly and Brooke Vessey in the 100 yard fly. Krueger took second in the 100 fly while Vessey was third in the 50 free.

Aztec swimmers turned in a total of 22 personal season best times during the meet.

SDSU's Jeanette Engzell broke the school record in the 200 yard breaststroke with the time of 2:19.13, eclipsing the former mark by .5 seconds. The previous record was set by Courtney Hoblick in 1996-97

She also finished second in the 100 breast with a time of 1:04.76. That mark is the second-fastest time in SDSU history in that event.

In addition to Engzell's performance, a total of nine other individual events saw improvements in SDSU all-time top 10 marks during last weekend's meet. Here are those marks and where they stand on the Aztec lists:
Brooke Vessey......100 Fly.....57.28 (5th)
Elisabeth Krueger..100 Fly.....57.76 (7th)
Elena Karpeeva*....100 Back....58.74 (7th)
Elena Karpeeva*....200 Back....2:06.16 (6th)
Elena Karpeeva*....200 IM......2:09.91 (9th)
Alex Peters*.......200 Free....1:53.48 (7th)
Bojana Duric.......500 Free....5:04.46 (10th)
Bojana Duric......1000 Free....10:21.79 3rd)
Jessica Morrill....200 Breast..1:06.58 (8th)

An asterisk indicates a first-time entry into the Aztec record book. Vessey's time moved her from sixth to fifth on the top 10 list in her event. Duric went from fourth to third in the 1000 free. The other three (Krueger, Morrill and Duric in the 500) were already on the top list and remained in their current position with an improved mark.

In addition, a pair of relay teams also cracked the top 10 SDSU marks. The 200 medley relay (Karpeeva, Engzell, Kruger and B. Vessey) recorded the fifth-fastest time in that event (1:46.31) while the 400 free relay squad (Solimani, Peters, Power, McCoy) had the ninth-best time ever (3:34.04) by an SDSU team.

Elena Karpeeva and Alex Peters, both of whom joined the team at the semester break, have made an immediate contribution to the squad.

In her first meet, Karpeeva finished second (of 16) in the 200 back (2:06.16) and third in both the 100 back (58.74) and 200 IM (2:09.91). She was the top SDSU finisher in those events and all three-times are the second-fastest by an SDSU swimmer this season.

Peters, meanwhile, took second (of 16) in the 200 free (1:53.48) and fourth (of 14) in the 500 free (5:04.84). She was also a member of the 400 free relay quartet that turned in the ninth-fastest time in school history.

San Diego State junior Alex Barstad has qualified for the NCAA Zone E Diving Regionals to be held in Oklahoma City March 12-14. Barstad secured her qualification to the Zone meet when she turned in a score of 267.89 in the one-meter competition at the dual meet against TCU and Centenary on Jan. 17. Her point total gave her second place at the meet and she also finished second in the three-meter diving with a mark of 265.34. Both of her scores were personal season bests and the top marks for an SDSU diver this season.

The newcomers among the Aztec swimmers and divers are making an immediate impact on the program. A total of 20 new swimming marks and two relay times have been added to the all-time SDSU top 10's. Eleven of the new individual entries are by true freshmen with six others by transfers in their first year at SDSU. In addition, diver Alex Barstad has recorded the second-best mark in the one-meter and fourth-best score in the three-meter.

The Aztecs have a four swimmers listed among the top 10 times in the MWC this season in various events.
