Two Aztecs Set to Compete at NCAA Zone E Diving Regionals
March 12, 2008
SAN DIEGO - San Diego State divers Caitlin Atkinson and Megan Flanagan will travel to Oklahoma City, Okla., to compete in the 2008 NCAA Zone E Diving Regionals from March 13-15. The event will be hosted by Air Force at the Oklahoma City Community College Aquatic Center, the site of the recently completed Mountain West Conference championship meet.
Both Atkinson and Flanagan advanced to the Zone E Regionals by meeting the qualifying standards during the regular season. Atkinson surpassed the minimum point total (265) on the 1-meter board with a score of 269.10 in the Aztecs' double dual meet against TCU and Air Force on Jan. 4. In the Scarlet and Black's final regular season meet on Feb. 2, the Laguna Niguel, Calif., native topped her previous mark in the 1-meter event with a school-record 280.88. Flanagan, meanwhile, met the 3-meter qualifying standard (280) against the University of San Diego on Feb. 2, when she crushed the previous SDSU school record (265.50) with a score of 300.83.
The women's competition will get underway on Thursday, March 13, with the 1-meter event beginning at 4:15 p.m. (CT). The 3-meter board will take place on Friday with a 10:30 a.m. CT start. The top finishers from this weekend will advance to the NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio, from March 20-22.
This is the second straight year that Atkinson and Flanagan have qualified for the Zone E Regionals, and it also marks just the second time in school history that Aztec divers have advanced to the NCAA qualifying round.
