Swimmers Open 2003-04 Season At UOP Invitational

Stockton, Calif. - The San Diego State women's swimming team kicked off its 2003-04 season with day one of the UOP Invitational at Pacific's Kris Kjeldsen Pool in Stockton, Calif. The meet include the host school as well as the Aztecs plus San Francisco State, UC Santa Cruz and Cal State Bakersfield. Heading into the second day of competition, SDSU finds itself in second place with 290 points, trailing UOP which finished with 426 points after the meet's first 11 events.
The Aztecs began day one of the competition with a second place finish in the 200 free relay, with the quartet of Adriana Quirke, Jennifer Graham Hannah Ryan and Caitlin Friedhoff tuning in a time of 1:39.54. It was a mix of veterans and newcomers with seniors Ryan and Graham combining with the freshman duo.
SDSU also got a strong performance in the 400 medley relay, clocking a time of 4:01.45, good for another second-place finish.
One of the Aztecs' top individual efforts of the afternoon was Hannah Ryan's fourth-place finish in the 500 freestyle. The senior recorded a 5:03.48 to establish a new personal best mark as an Aztec.
In the 1,650 freestyle event, San Diego State took four of the top seven places, led by senior Megan Storey's third-place finish in 17:20.39. Others in that group included Ryan (fourth in 17:31.69), Emily Parker (sixth in 17:52.10) and Amy Van Dyke (seventh in 18:46.69)
Action continues in the Invitational all day Saturday. Following this meet, the Aztecs have two weeks to prepare for their home opener, a dual meet with cross-town rival University of San Diego on Saturday, Nov. 1, at 1:00 p.m. at the Ray & Joan Kroc Community Center.
