No. 46 WT Opens 2014 With Two Victories

SAN DIEGO - The 46th-ranked Aztec women's tennis team kicked-off its 2014 dual-match season with two victories on Saturday. The day began with a 6-1 win over UC Riverside followed by a defeat of Cal State Fullerton with an identical 6-1 score at Aztec Tennis Center. San Diego State opened its spring schedule at 2-0 for the 10th-consecutive season.
Senior Laura Antonana Iriarte and junior Kristin Buth posted the first win of the season as the duo blanked Courtney Pattugalan and Tiffany Jue of UC Riverside, 6-0. Dora Somoracz and Hailey Johnson clinched the point in first doubles as the team dismissed Kat Saltarelli and Jasmine Almaguer, 6-1. The third doubles match featuring Tami Nguyen and Olivia Larsson against Bergeson and Doan did not finish due to the point being previously decided.
Antonana Iriarte notched her second victory on the day as she finished off Almaguer in first singles, 6-1, 6-1. The senior's doubles partner, Buth, also took her match as she defeated Saltarelli in second singles, 6-2, 6-1. First-year Aztec Johnson posted the match-clinching win in fourth singles as she downed Bergeson, 6-3, 6-2. In fifth singles, Somoracz came up short to Jue in a tiebreaker, 2-6, 7-6, 10-6. Isabelle Hoorn picked up a win over Sophie El-Kara in six singles, 6-2, 6-2. Freshman Kennedy Davis closed out the match by defeating Bergeson in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
The second match of the day got underway with a doubles victory on the third court by Davis and Hoorn teaming up to take down Jessica Pepa and Rebekkah Ermac of Cal State Fullerton, 6-0. Kalika Slevcove and Alexis Valenzuela evened the score for the Titans by getting past Somoracz and Johnson in second doubles, 6-2. Buth and Antonana took the point on the first court by defeating Morgan McIntosh and Camille De Leon, 6-3.
In fourth singles, Nguyen posted the Aztecs' second point of the match by downing Slevcove, 6-3, 6-2. Somoracz finished off Ermac in sixth singles, 6-1, 6-4. Antonana Iriarte closed out the match in first singles as she dismissed Valenzuela, 6-2, 6-2. De Leon would notch the only point for Fullerton as she got past Davis in third singles, 6-1, 6-4. In fifth singles, Johnson defeated Pepa, 6-4, 6-4. Buth would top off the doubleheader with a battle in second singles. It would take a 10-point breaker but the San Diego State junior took care of McIntosh, 6-4, 4-6, 10-4.
SDSU will get back on the courts when it travels north to face Long Beach State on Jan. 25.
