Women's Tennis Takes Season-Opening Doubleheader

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's tennis team opened its spring season in dominant fashion on Saturday by sweeping UC Riverside, 7-0, and defeating Cal State Fullerton, 6-1. On the day, the Aztecs would only drop one match at Aztec Tennis Center. SDSU opens 2013 with a 2-0 home record for the ninth consecutive season.
The Aztecs had a perfect early outing on Saturday, taking every point from their morning opponents, beginning in doubles play. In the third singles spot, Kristin Buth and Tami Nguyen took the first victory by downing Kate Bergeson and Thanh Doan, 8-3. Laura Antonana Iriarte and Dora Somoracz would be the second duo to finish off a Highlander pair by the same 8-3 score, defeating Natalie McKay and Courtney Pattugalan. In the No. 1 singles position, Julia Wais and Michela Casanova completed the doubles sweep by knocking off Jamie and Taylor Raney, 8-6.
Singles action got underway with Antonana-Iriarte dismissing Taylor Raney, 6-4, 6-1. Freshman Nguyen followed by finishing off Bergeson, 6-1, 6-1. Julia Wais had no problems getting past Jamie Raney as the senior took the win, 6-2, 6-3. In the third singles matchup, Buth faced and defeated McKay, 6-3, 6-1. Isabelle Hoorn would notch the fifth point for SDSU, downing Doan, 6-2, 6-4. Casanova would ensure UC Riverside left empty handed as she battled and conquered Pattugalan, 6-1, 7-6 (5).
The second portion of the double header began just as the first with the Aztecs sweeping doubles play to take the point. Wais and Casanova easily downed Kalika Slevcove and Morgan McIntosh, 8-1. In the third doubles match, Buth and Hoorn defeated Emilia Borkowski and Megan Sanford, 8-4. In the final doubles match of the day, Antonana-Iriarte and Somoracz completed the sweep, topping Tiffany Mai and Monica Rodriguez, 8-4.
Singles play opened with Nguyen and Wais decisively downing their opponents. Nguyen took Rodriguez, 6-0, 6-1, followed by Wais over Mai, 6-3, 6-0. Casanova defeated Malorie de la Cruz , 6-2, 6-1, while Antonana-Iriarte claimed the win over McIntosh on court No. 2, 6-3, 6-2. Hoorn saw the first of two late battles on the courts as she fought with Borkowski for each point, ultimately posting the win, 6-3, 2-6, 10-7. Somoracz was the last Aztec under the lights on Saturday, as she went head to head with Slevcove. Somoracz would drop the match, 6-3, 7-5.
The Aztecs will next take the courts on Feb. 1 when they will face Washington at Aztec Tennis Center at 2 p.m. PT.
