No. 46 WT Drops Close Match To No. 45 LBSU, 4-3

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The No. 46 San Diego State women's tennis team came up short to 45th-ranked Long Beach State on Saturday, 4-3. The Aztecs traveled north to face the 49ers at Rhodes Tennis Center but could not bring home the win. With the loss, SDSU stands at 2-1 on the young season.
Action got underway with doubles play on Saturday. Laura Eales and Holly Reid of Long Beach State would notch the first point for the 49ers by getting past Isabelle Hoorn and Tami Nguyen in third doubles, 6-3. Ebba Unden and Maeva Razakasoa claimed the doubles point for LBSU be defeating Dora Somoracz and Hailey Johnson on the first court, 6-4. In second doubles Kristen Buth and Laura Antonaña Iriarte downed Julie Gerard and Karolina Rozenberg, 7-5.
In singles action, Buth could not keep up with Razakasoa on the second court as she fell, 6-0, 6-2. In sixth singles Somoracz came up short to Reid, 6-0, 7-6. With the score at 3-0 in Long Beach State's favor, SDSU faced an uphill battle. Freshman Kennedy Davis would put the Aztecs on the board by taking her match against Hayley Thompson to a 10-point tiebreaker, 6-2, 3-6, 10-8. The 49er's Rozenberg would seal the win for LBSU as she defeated Johnson, 6-2, 7-5. Despite the match being decided, San Diego State would not quit and posted two victories to bring the final score to 4-3. Nguyen fought for her victory in third singles as she took the match to a 10-point tiebreaker against Gerard, 4-6, 7-5, 10-5. Antonaña Iriarte would also battle for her decision against Unden, 6-7 (6), 6-1, 10-4.
The Aztecs will get back in action on Feb. 1 as they play host to UC Davis at noon at Aztec Tennis Center.
