No. 48 WT Drops Match to No. 38 UC Irvine, 4-0

SAN DIEGO - The 48th-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team came up short to UC Irvine, 4-0, on Friday. The match was originally scheduled for Thursday but inclement weather forced the match to be postponed until today at 3 pm. With the loss the Aztecs drop to 3-2 on the season.
Thursday afternoon saw doubles play finish as UC Irvine took the early lead by claiming the point. In first doubles, Laura Antonaña Iriarte and Kristin Buth could not keep up with Ali Facey and Franziska Goettsching, 6-4. On the third court, Tami Nguyen and Kennedy Davis were outpaced by Brooke Schweyer and Sarah Stadfelt, 6-4. The match on court No. 2 between Hailey Johnson and Dora Somoracz and Marivick Mamiit and Sarah Gong did not finish as the point was already decided.
Singles play was stopped on Thursday but resumed on Friday afternoon. In fifth singles, Johnson was defeated by Kat Facey, 6-1, 6-3. Gong would put the Anteaters within one point of victory as she took the decision in third singles over Nguyen, 7-5, 6-3. In sixth singles, Stadfelt clinched the win for UC Irvine as she got past Somoracz, 6-3, 6-3. The remaining singles matches were left unfinished due to the outcome having been decided. Antonaña Iriarte was down in first singles, 5-7, 1-2, to Mamiit when the match was stopped. In second singles, Buth had taken the first set and was attempting a rally in the second, 6-3, 1-3, when her match against Goettsching was halted. Davis was on top on court No. 4, 7-6 (4), 2-0, over Ali Facey before the match was decided.
SDSU will travel to Malibu, Calif., tomorrow to take on Pepperdine at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center at 1 pm.
