WT Drops 4-3 Heartbreaker To No. 43 Long Beach State

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's tennis team was unable to finish a late rally against 43rd-ranked Long Beach State on Friday, ultimately falling by a score of 4-3. The 49ers would take an early lead by claiming the doubles point, leaving the Aztecs to fight an uphill battle in singles at Aztec Tennis Center.
On court No. 1, and the first to finish, Klaudia Malenovska and Sarah Cantlay defeated seniors Julia Wais and Alicia Aguilar, 8-3. Second and third doubles would finish in that order, with Laura Antonana Iriarte and Tami Nguyen succumbing to Ebba Unden and Karolina Rozenberg, 8-2, while Kristin Buth and Michela Casanova fell to Anne-Sophie Willems and Hazuki Onaga, 8-4.
Long Beach State notched its second point in sixth singles as Willems got past Casanova, 6-4, 6-1. Antonana Iriarte would put SDSU on the board as she downed Cantlay in third singles, 6-3, 7-6 (4). Unden would score her second victory of the day, over Aguilar, 6-4, 6-4. On court No. 5, Buth fought back for San Diego State, defeating Rozenberg, 6-3, 6-1. Freshman Nguyen battled add to her undefeated streak in singles play as she put away Eva Rodriguez, 6-2, 2-6, 6-1. In the tie-breaking and final match, Malenovska broke the Aztecs' heart as she defeated Wais, 6-3, 7-5.
Next up, SDSU will travel north to Los Angeles to take on No. 6 USC on Feb. 20.
