No. 58 Women's Tennis Knocks Off LMU, 4-3
Feb. 23, 2014
SAN DIEGO - Junior Kristin Buth (Kaiserslaustern, Germany) earned a deciding three-set singles victory to lift the No. 58 San Diego State women's tennis team to a win over Loyola Marymount, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at Aztec Tennis Center.
The junior's thrilling victory helped SDSU (5-6) snap a three-match losing streak, with each of its previous three defeats coming against ranked opponents. The Aztecs dropped the doubles point to begin the day, but won four out of six singles matches to earn the dual-match victory.
San Diego State's No. 2 doubles team of sophomore Dora Somoracz (Budapest, Hungary) and junior Hailey Johnson (Fallbrook, Calif.) fell to LMU's Ellie Grossman and Lauri Mueller, 8-5, to begin the day, and the Aztecs No. 1 unit of Laura Antonaña Iriarte (San Sebastián, Spain) and Buth were topped by Miya Jin and Jessica Perez, 8-5, as the Lions clinched the doubles point.
Sophomore Tami Nguyen (Muntinlupa City, Philippines) and freshman Kennedy Davis (San Jose, Calif.) held off Kristine Kouyoumjian and Reka Rohonyi, 8-6 (4), in the No. 3 spot, but only after the doubles point was already decided.
The momentum shifted in singles play, however, as 35th-ranked Antonaña Iriarte quickly defeated Kouyoumjian, 6-1, 6-2, in the No. 1 slot, and Nguyen knocked off Jin, 6-1, 6-4, in No. 3 singles.
Sophomore Isabelle Hoorn (Soest, Netherlands) dropper her match to Rohonyi, 6-4, 6-3, in No. 5 singles, but Davis put SDSU right back on top with her victory over Mueller, 6-4, 6-2, in the No. 4 slot. After Somoracz fell to Grossman in No. 6 singles, 6-3, 7-6 (6), to knot the match 3-3, Buth sealed the dual-match victory with her three-set triumph in the No. 2 spot over Perez, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.
The Aztecs return to action on Thursday, Feb. 27, when they play host to South Florida beginning at 2 p.m. PT.
