Feb. 24, 2018
The San Diego State women’s tennis team came up short in Saturday’s neutral site match against Grand Canyon, dropping a 4-2 decision to the Lopes at the University of Hawai’i Tennis Complex. The Aztecs missed an opportunity to improve its doubles point win streak on Saturday after doubles play was cancelled to shorten play time due to the threat of rain in the forecast.
With doubles action scratched from the schedule, the Lopes and Aztecs started off a little late with singles play. In the top seed, senior Jana Buth breezed through two sets to claim 6-1, 6-3 victory over Martina Lo Pumo right off the bat. Senior Paola Diaz was not as fortunate on court three, dropping 6-3, 6-3 to Emilia Occhipinti to tie the score at one-all.
On courts five and six, GCU’s Celina Buhr matched her teammate in the third seed by claiming a 6-3, 6-3 win over freshman Nnena Nadozie, as did Kylie Waschuk, going 6-3, 6-3 against Aztec freshman Abbie Mulbarger.
With the overall score at 3-1, junior Jenny Moinard held on to claim a win in straight sets over Valentina Mokrova, 6-4, 7-6 (3). Despite Moinard’s solid finish, the Lopes clinched the victory in the final match on court No. 2, where junior Magda Aubets dropped a tight three-set match to Lana Rinaldi, 4-6, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (6).
