TEMPE, Ariz. -
The San Diego State women’s tennis team played its second nationally-ranked opponent of the season on Friday when it visited No. 33 Arizona State, where the Aztecs dropped a 4-0 match to the Sun Devils at the Whiteman Tennis Center. ASU clinched the match with a doubles win and by claiming the first three singles matchups.
ASU distributed its strength in doubles by splitting up both of its nationally-ranked duos for the match against the Aztecs. On court two, Laryn John-Baptiste and Ilze Hatingh blanked junior Jenny Moinard and freshman Abbie Mulbarger, 6-0, on court two and Nicole Fossa Huergo/Tereza Kolarova of ASU claimed a 6-1 victory over seniors Jana Buth and Paola Diaz in the top seed to claim the doubles point for the Sun Devils.
Despite maintaining a few close singles matches, SDSU could not prevent ASU from taking three early victories on courts two, one and five. In the second seed, junior Magda Aubets fell in sets to ASU’s Hattingh, 6-0, 6-1, and Buth was unable to keep up with No. 84 Lauryn John-Baptiste on court No. 1, dropping 6-3, 6-1.
ASU’s clinch came soon after on court five, where Sasa Klanecek topped freshman Nnena Nadozie, 6-1, 6-4, to win the dual and prevent the Aztecs from taking any further points.
