Aztecs Fly by Eagles, 6-1
March 2, 2010
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's tennis team snapped a two-match losing streak by defeating Eastern Michigan, 6-1, Tuesday afternoon at Aztec Tennis Center. With the victory, the Aztecs improve to 5-4 on the season.
SDSU started the match off on the right foot by sweeping all three doubles matches to take the early point. Julia Trunk and Julia Wais were first off the court at No. 2 with their 8-1 win and were closely followed by the duo of Alicia Aguilar and Emma Cioffi at third doubles with their identical 8-1 decision. The Aztecs made it a clean sweep shortly thereafter when Roxanne and Sierra Ellison pocketed an 8-3 victory at the top of the order.
It was much of the same in singles action where San Diego State emerged with six of the seven decisions. The Aztec dominance began with Sierra Ellison at No. 3 when she lost only one game en route to her 6-0, 6-1 thumping of Karina Ahuja. Wais experienced similar success at No. 4 when she cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Georgia de'Lisle-Tarr, giving SDSU a 3-0 lead.
Then with only one point needed to secure the team's fifth win of the year, Cioffi came through in the clutch and swept Celine Donnet at No. 5, 6-0, 6-0. With her teammates finished at Nos. 3-5, Olivia Colman decided to put the bottom of the lineup to rest and defeated Marcela Rivero in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0, at sixth singles.
The only matches left to be completed after Colman's victory involved two of San Diego State's nationally ranked players. Trunk, who is ranked No. 65, provided the team's sixth point of the afternoon after she defeated Miriam Westerink, 6-3, 6-2, at the top of the order. Then Aguilar, who was making her debut as a ranked player at No. 71, was the last to finish, but fell in heart-breaking fashion, 7-6(7), 4-6, 12-10, to Xu Chang at No. 2.
SDSU looks to build on its win on Friday, March 5, when it takes on fifth-ranked California in Berkeley. First serve is slated for 1:30 p.m. PT.
