March 4, 2006
SEATTLE - San Diego State extended its winning streak to a season-high three matches as it upset No. 38 Washington, 5-2, at Nordstrom Indoor Tennis Center in Seattle, Wash., Saturday afternoon. This marks the second consecutive year in which the Aztecs have defeated the Huskies. The win improves SDSU's overall record to 6-4, while Washington loses its fifth straight and falls to 1-6.
The Aztecs, again for the second day in a row, won the doubles point after Alesya Vidov and Eliska Krausova cruised to an 8-1 victory to start the day at No. 2. The Huskies top duo of Dinka Hadzic and Victoria Brymer were next off the court as it defeated Dita Hauerlandova and Sisse Nielsen, 8-4, at the top position. Then with the point hinging on No. 3 doubles, Milana Yusupov and Esther Cadua pulled off the 9-7 win to give SDSU the 1-0 advantage heading into singles.
San Diego State took a commanding 3-0 lead as Nielsen and Cadua breezed through their matches at No. 5-6, posting straight set victories over their respective opponents.
Washington staged a rally of its own as it posted wins at No. 1 and 4 singles to cut the Aztec lead to one. But with two matches left in progress, Krausova won a three-set match over Tara Simpson, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, to secure the victory for the visitors. Vidov gave the contest its final score with a 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(3) effort over Brymer at No. 2.
SDSU returns to action Monday, March 6, as it plays host to Oregon at Aztec Tennis Center. The match is set to get underway at 1 p.m. PST.
