March 4, 2011
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's tennis team returned to Aztec Tennis Center on Friday and dropped a 4-3 decision to Long Beach State. The loss puts SDSU's record at 4-6 on the season.
The Aztecs found themselves down 1-0 early after finishing on the wrong end of all three doubles matches.
San Diego State, however, recovered in singles despite trailing 2-0 after Laura Antonana Iriarte fell at No. 6. The Aztec comeback started at No. 3 when Sierra Ellison posted a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Deborah Armstrong.
With SDSU's deficit cut in half, Emma Cioffi knotted the score at 2-2 after cruising to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Sarah Cantlay at No. 4. The Aztecs eventually took the lead when Julia Trunk won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, at the top of the ladder in her match with Anais Dallara.
San Diego State could not close the deal, however, as Long Beach State's Jaklin Alawi defeated Julia Wais in three sets at No. 2, which tied the match, and Anna Jeczmionka emerged with a hard-fought 7-5, 6-7, 6-3 victory at No. 5 to provide the 49ers with the narrow decision.
The Aztecs return to action on Wednesday, March 9, when it plays host to Pepperdine at 2 p.m.
