SDSU Women's Tennis Takes Down No. 8 Washington

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State, ranked No. 68 in the nation, defeated eighth-ranked Washington, 5-2, Saturday afternoon at SDSU Tennis Stadium. It is the Aztecs' fourth straight win, three of which have come against nationally ranked opposition. The victory snaps Washington's five-match winning streak and improves SDSU's record to 7-3.
The Aztecs began the afternoon by taking the doubles point thanks to wins at number two and three.
SDSU's team of Alesya Vidov and Dita Hauerlandova downed Washington's Mugette Ahn and Allison Rainey, 8-4, at number two. At number three, Sisse Nielsen and Nina Spaeth recorded an 8-3 win over the Huskies' Stephanie Svanfeldt-Monika Kolbovic.
In singles action, the bottom of the Aztecs' lineup continued its stellar play for the fourth straight match.
After Hauerlandova defeated Ahn, 3-6, 6-3, 10-0, at number two, SDSU followed it up with wins at numbers four through six.
Eliska Krausova won in straight sets over Tara Simpson, 6-0, 6-2, at number four. Krausova's win is her fourth in a row and is now 5-1 this spring.
Speaking of winning streaks, Indra Erichsen won her second straight, defeating Allison Rainey, 6-1, 6-2, at number five and Spaeth notched her fifth consecutive win, disposing of Stephanie Svanfeldt, 6-1, 6-1.
Saturday's win marks the first time in nearly three years that the Aztecs have defeated a team ranked in the top-15. SDSU last accomplished the feat on March 28, 2002, when it beat No. 15 UNLV, 4-3.
The Aztecs will return to action March 8, when they host Florida State. The match is slated for a 2 p.m. start.
