SAN DIEGO -
The San Diego State women’s tennis team snapped its three-match losing streak with a solid 4-1 victory over Furman on Tuesday afternoon at the Aztec Tennis Center. The Aztecs came from behind to claim the doubles point and only allowed one Paladin victory in singles before clinching the match.
After dropping the doubles decision for two straight duals following a six-match win streak, SDSU bounced back on the doubles courts to secure the point on Tuesday. In the first match, junior Magda Aubets and freshman Nnena Nadozie recorded a 7-5 loss on court three to Carol Elizabeth Kerman and Georgie Walker.
Despite losing the first doubles match, competition on courts one and two eventually came down to seven-point tiebreaks after both pairs had been down. Junior Jenny Moinard and sophomore Mia Smith nabbed a 7-6 (0) over Katarina Kozarov and Aryn Greene in the top seed, while seniors Jana Buth and Paola Diaz notched an exciting 7-6 (6) win over Katty Weymouth and Danni Vines to seal the deal for SDSU.
In singles action, freshman Abbie Mulbarger quickly topped her opponent, Georgie Walker, 6-2, 6-2, on court six to bring SDSU’s lead up to 2-0. Furman then claimed their sole point of the afternoon when Aubets was challenged against Weymouth, dropping a 6-1, 6-1 decision.
On court four, Moinard battled Furman’s Vines, taking the third match point with a 6-3, 6-1 win. Although there was close competition in second and third sets on courts three and one, it was Nadozie who clinched the decision for the Aztecs when she defeated Kerman, 7-6 (3), 6-3, in the No. 5 seed.
