SDSU Women's Tennis Downed by No. 16 California, 5-2

BERKELEY, Calif. - The San Diego State women's tennis team was topped by No. 16 California, 5-2, on Friday afternoon at the Channing Tennis Courts.
The Aztecs started off strong in doubles play with freshman Kennedy Davis and sophomore Tami Nguyen defeating Lynn Chi and Alice Duranteau, 8-5, on court No. 3. Anett Schutting and Maegan Manasse proved too much for senior Laura Antonaña Iriarte and junior Kristin Buth on court No. 1, surpassing them 8-5. Sophomore Dora Somoracz and junior Hailey Johnson secured the doubles point for SDSU by knocking off the No. 39 duo, Kelly Chui and Denise Starr, 8-6, on court No. 2.
San Diego State (5-8) started off rocky early in singles action with No. 28 Starr overcoming Nguyen, 6-3, 6-0, on court No. 3, while on court No. 5, Somoracz was unable to pick up the point as she fell to Klara Fabikova, 6-3, 6-1.
No. 121 Buth could not pick up the win against No. 14 Zsofi Susanyi in the No. 2 spot, as she lost 6-3, 6-2. No. 78 Manasse clinched the victory for the Golden Bears by taking out Johnson on court No. 6, 6-1, 6-4.
Davis proved she was not going down easy as she forced three sets against No. 43 Chi before eventually dropping the decision, 2-6, 7-6 (6), 1-0 (10) in the No. 4 spot. No. 54 Antonaña Iriarte pulled the upset against No. 26 Anett Schutting in a three-set victory, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, earning the second point for the Aztecs in their loss against California.
Next up, SDSU returns to The Mesa to begin its three-match home stand, starting with Louisville on Friday, March 14, at 2 p.m.
