March 9, 2012
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's tennis team won its second straight match as it downed UC Santa Barbara, 6-1, at Aztec Tennis Center Friday afternoon. The win lifts the Aztecs' record to 4-8 on the season.
SDSU's doubles play was strong as always as it won two of the three matches. Emma Cioffi and Laura Antonana Iriarte got things going for the home side as they registered an 8-4 victory over the UCSB tandem of April Scatliffe and Kiersten Meehan at No. 3. The Aztecs then wrapped up the point when Alicia Aguilar and Julia Wais were 8-6 winners at No. 2 over Erica Cano and Sofia Novak.
San Diego State carried the momentum into singles and put together one of its most complete efforts of the season.
The clinching match came at the top of the order where Wais put together a 6-3, 6-3 performance to oust Natalia Lozano. UCSB claimed the decision at No. 4 before Cioffi and Antonana Iriarte emerged with wins at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively.
The Aztecs return to action Thursday, March 15, when Louisville visits Montezuma Mesa. The non-league match is slated to start at 2 p.m. PT.
