No. 57 W. Tennis Earns 5-2 Win Over Pepperdine

SAN DIEGO - The 57th-ranked Aztecs bounced back from Sunday's loss to No. 15 California by defeating Pepperdine, 5-2, including taking down two ranked singles players en route to the win. SDSU would fall early by dropping the doubles point but bounced back in singles and claimed the victory. San Diego State is now 8-4 on the season.
In first doubles, the 13th-ranked duo in the nation, Lorraine Guillermo and Khunpak Issara got past Laura Antonana Iriarte and Michela Casanova, 8-3. On court No. 3, Alicia Aguilar and Isabelle Hoorn would put the Aztecs on the board by downing Tara Panu and Megan Moore, 8-4. The doubles point would come down to court No. 2, where Julia Wais and Kristin Buth engaged in a bout with Michela Capannolo and Ale Granillo. Despite taking the match to a tiebreaker, the Waves came out on top, 9-8 (4), and Pepperdine would clinch the point.
SDSU came out charging in singles play with freshman Tami Nguyen being the first to dismiss her opponent in Moore on court No. 5, 6-0, 6-1. Reigning Mountain West Player of the Week, Julia Wais, had an impressive outing as she made quick work of the 54th-ranked singles player in the nation, Guillermo, on court No. 1, 6-4, 6-1. In third singles, Antonana Iriarte would be the second Aztec for the day to defeat a ranked player as she fought for the point, defeating No. 110 Granillo, 6-0, 3-6, 6-1. On court No. 4, Buth would clinch the win for San Diego State as she downed Capannolo, 6-3, 6-1. With the victory in hand, Aguilar would retire in the third set against Issara in second singles, 6-1, 7-6 (5), 1-1. Notching the final point for the Aztecs was Casanova in sixth singles as she defeated Danielle Feneridis, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.
San Diego State will return to the courts at Aztec Tennis Center on Friday, March 22 to take on Dartmouth at 2 pm PT.
